“Hope springs eternal”

I wrote a series of four haiku in 2010 in response to Deepwater Horizon. At that point 2017 seemed a long way off. Then we had Trump and Armageddon seemed ever more likely, and now it’s 2023, climate breakdown seems to be accelerating. So maybe an update that ignites the will to keep plugging on would be helpful… There are a few glimmers of hope. Just a few.

1996
The Sea Empress holed . . .
crude oil slicking north and south
tarred the spring feathers

2003
Heat-waves in Europe
slaughtered old and young alike –
climate change ‘r’ us

2010
Katrina Mark II:
Deepwater Horizon spills
poisonous record

2017
North Sea in winter,
OPEC spikes the markets and
ignites Armagedd-

2024
on hold for a time
pending negotiations;
hope springs eternal
