Who can help me?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/clarebryden.co.uk\/wwg\/problematic-politics\/\">I&#8217;ve written before<\/a> about how the St Loyes ward is in the Exeter City Council area, but in the East Devon constituency, and how since 2016 the boundaries of the two don&#8217;t quite match, and nor do the boundaries of St Loyes and the Devon County Council division of&nbsp;Wonford &amp; St Loyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What other boundaries don&#8217;t match? Almost all of them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The administrative county of Devon excludes Plymouth and Torbay unitary authorities.&nbsp;The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ceremonial_counties_of_England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ceremonial county of Devon<\/a> includes&nbsp;Plymouth and Torbay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For some reason, postcodes (eg EX2 5XX), <a href=\"https:\/\/random.dev.openstreetmap.org\/postcodes\/?zoom=11&amp;lat=50.70245&amp;lon=-3.49742&amp;layers=B0T0F0F0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">sectors (EX2 5), districts (EX2) and areas (EX)<\/a> bear no resemblance to administrative boundaries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/exeter.anglican.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Diocese of Exeter<\/a> is often known as the Church of England in Devon, but the boundaries don&#8217;t&nbsp;<em>quite<\/em> match.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While on the subject of the church, you need to know <a href=\"http:\/\/arcg.is\/zD8yH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">which parish you live in<\/a> when you get married in church. St Loyes is covered by the parishes of St Michael and All Angels, Heavitree to the west, Trinity Church, and&nbsp;St Michael &amp; All Angels,&nbsp;Sowton.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St Loyes hosts the Middlemoor&nbsp;HQ of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon-cornwall.police.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Devon &amp; Cornwall Police<\/a>&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;and one of the fire stations of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsfire.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Devon &amp; Somerset Fire &amp; Rescue Service<\/a>&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;and the HQ of the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240206071029\/https:\/\/www.swast.nhs.uk\/welcome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">South Western Ambulance Service<\/a>, which serves the&nbsp;Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and the former Avon area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That actually has the same boundaries (shock!) as the official <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_West_England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">South West England region<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_West_England_(European_Parliament_constituency)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">South West England European Parliament constituency<\/a>&nbsp;(which isn&#8217;t quite the same thing).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Back to health, and the structure of NHS England.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/care-and-health\/adults\/health-and-wellbeing\/\" target=\"_blank\">Public health and wellbeing<\/a>\u00a0is managed by Devon County Council. We&#8217;re almost nearing some standardisation!\u00a0For the planning and commissioning of health services, St Loyes used to fall within the Eastern Locality of the Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group, but on 1 April 2019 this merged with\u00a0the South Devon and Torbay CCG to form NHS Devon CCG, covering the whole of (the ceremonial county of) Devon. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/service-search\/find-a-gp\" target=\"_blank\">GP practices<\/a>\u00a0as a whole align with this area, but I can&#8217;t find a map of their boundaries. They almost certainly don&#8217;t align at the local level with wards, postcodes or&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/map.devon.gov.uk\/portal\/apps\/webappviewer\/index.html?id=4376e0b5c5974a1cac5337beaf0395ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Primary and secondary schools<\/a> are managed by Devon County Council, but the&nbsp;catchments don&#8217;t align with council wards or divisions. In 2019-20 St Loyes is covered by four primary school catchments, and also hosts St Nicholas&#8217; Catholic Primary School, and three secondary school catchments, and hosts St Peter&#8217;s CofE School.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220707022354\/https:\/\/www.southwestwater.co.uk\/frequently-asked-questions\/about-us\/what-area-do-you-serve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">South West Water<\/a> can&#8217;t even agree with itself on its water supply and drainage services. It supplies water to Cornwall and Devon, but the eastern boundary for drainage follows river catchments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Different companies manage the high voltage electricity transmission (National Grid in England &amp; Wales only), regional distribution (Western Power Distribution), and supply (whoever your household has chosen).&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernpower.co.uk\/our-network\/distribution-area-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Western Power Distribution&#8217;s area<\/a> extends all the way to the east coast, and it&#8217;s definition of the South West stretches into Somerset and Dorset.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Different companies also manage the high pressure gas transmission (National Grid Gas\u00a0across the whole of Great Britain), regional distribution (Wales &amp; West Utilities), and supply (whoever your household has chosen).\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200922052650\/https:\/\/www.energynetworks.org\/info\/faqs\/gas-distribution-map.html\" target=\"_blank\">Wales &amp; West Utilities [now National Grid]<\/a> has a bizarre fractal-esque boundary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s enough to make you want to collapse on your sofa and escape into TV.&nbsp; But if you want to catch up with the regional news&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BBC_South_West\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">BBC South West<\/a> serves Cornwall, Devon, Scilly, SW Somerset, W Dorset and Channel Islands; and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ITV_West_Country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ITV West Country<\/a> is produced out of Bristol and serves Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, sometimes we might support England, Team GB, or the UK (&#8220;Royaume-Uni, nul points&#8221;).
