For some houses, the quarry face is their garden wall!<\/h3>\n<p>Heavitree breccia is the local stone. The stone and the quarries are named after Heavitree, but the origins are in St Loyes. Yet another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/clarebryden.co.uk\/wwg\/clare-rosie-wander\/\">St Loyes being the digestive system of Exete<\/a>r, the source of much of what it needs. Many of Exeter\u2019s most interesting and historic buildings are built of breccia. It has a character all of its own. It\u2019s a deep, Devonian red but is particularly characterised by being very coarse in texture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Q is for Quarries&#8221; is an interactive mobile tour around an A-Z of 26 different Heavitree breccia sites around the city of Exeter.&nbsp;There is one site for each letter of the alphabet, each telling its own story about the use of this material. L is for St Loye&#8217;s Chapel, and Q is of course for the Quarries.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Did you know?<br \/>\n<\/strong>St Loye is the patron saint of miners as well as goldsmiths!<\/h3>\n<p>There are two different versions of the trail. <strong>Placeify<\/strong> is a website designed for mobile devices. It presents an ordered trail, and allows for text and audio about each site. <strong>TiCL<\/strong> is an app using geolocation to find and direct the user to the nearest trail location. Each TiCL site links to a website with more information.<\/p>\n<p>If you want, you can follow the whole alphabet. There\u2019s a challenge for a day out in Exeter! Or you can create your own trail, like spelling out your own name. For example\u2026<br \/>\n<strong>SOPHIE<\/strong> takes you to shops and houses, boundary walls, churches, and two historic bridges<br \/>\n<strong>RYAN<\/strong> takes you to a castle, defensive walls, chapel, and priory<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"stone-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.placeify.co.uk\/QisforQuarries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Follow on Placeify<\/a> <a class=\"stone-button\" href=\"https:\/\/ticl.me\/Exeter\/headlines\/13556\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Follow on TiCL<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: right;\">&#8230;Enjoy!!<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Q is for Quarries&#8221; is part of the&nbsp;<strong>Heavitree Quarry Trails<\/strong> project. This came out of the place-based&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.heavitreesquilometre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Heavitree Squilometre<\/a>&nbsp;project animated by JoJo Spinks of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.interwovenproductions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Interwoven Productions<\/a>, and was also supported by <a href=\"http:\/\/exeter.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exeter City Council<\/a>.
