“That’s a Turnip for the Books?!”

The Turnip Prize is “a spoof art award of the lesser known Turner Prize.” Its tagline is “We know it’s crap, but is it art?” Usually the shortlisted entries are really bad puns. Last year’s winner was “Dismal And”, a drawing of an ampersand with a sad face, in response to Banksy’s Dismaland theme park.

In 2007, the Turnip Prize disqualified Banksy from competition for “trying too hard”. In 2016, I think I probably tried too hard.

Here’s the pile of books gleaned from my shelves, telling my story of how I decided to enter and how the prize-giving might (but didn’t) unfold. Hey ho. Maybe next year.
