They are highly corrosive, and\u00a0inhalation of air containing low levels of hydrogen chloride <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.sepa.org.uk\/SPRIPA\/Pages\/SubstanceInformation.aspx?pid=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can cause throat irritation or asthma<\/a>. Exposure to higher levels may result in effects including rapid breathing, blue colouring of the skin, fluid accumulation in the lungs and in extreme cases severe swelling of the throat, suffocation and death.\u00a0Inhalation of air containing hydrogen fluoride <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.sepa.org.uk\/SPRIPA\/Pages\/SubstanceInformation.aspx?pid=7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat<\/a>.
